Japan's post_earthquake reconstruction increase in steel demand, export volume will be reduced, the Indian car
manufacturers and South Korean shipyards have concerns about supply problems. Japan last year become Asia's
largest steel exporter , decrease of its steel exports will inevitably lead to tight supply of in Asia and the price
rising. Supply gap will be made up by China and South Korea ,it is a very good export opportunities especially
for China.
Currently, the power supply and port facilities damaged, it¡¯s difficult for Japanese steel mills to meet the
immediate needs of post_earthquake reconstruction. But in the long run, Japan's steel production capacity can
meet the needs of national reconstruction.
By the end of 2010, Japan has the steel production capacity of about 132.4 million tons, include crude steel
production 109.6 million tons, of which about 60 million tons to meet domestic demand, and the remaining
exports. The Japanese earthquake and tsunami have a huge negative impact on Japan¡¯s steel mills, although a
number of steel mill equipment was not directly damaged, but some car manufacturers production halts will
make demand reduced. But in the long term, post_earthquake reconstruction will require a lot of steel, and
some even make rash predictions, Japan needs to import more steel to meet the reconstruction needs. Analysts
pointed out that, from the view of Japan's crude steel production capacity and domestic demand, even if the
re_doubling of steel demand, the local steel could supply and meet demand.
So far, exclude the most severe earthquake shocked Sumitomo Metal Industries and Nippon Steel Corporation
Kamaishi Works Kashima plant has not resumed production, the other large steel mills were not affected by the
production have been restored. Nuclear explosion caused by insufficient production of electricity may also be
limited, after all, self_generating equipment used in many steel mills can meet some of the electricity demand.
Sumitomo Metal Industries Kashima plant still shut down two blast furnaces, the plant with an annual output
8.3 million tons of crude steel. Nippon Steel Corporation Kamaishi Works after the earthquake has been in a
shutdown of the plant is 60,000 tons per month, producing wire for tires and bridges.
